Football is a way of life. I subscribe heavily to this way of life. I remember watching the New York Jets with my grandfather on Sundays, all his buddies drinking beer and eating chicken wings in the living room. Talk about fond memories!
Football gatherings have changed since then. I am still a Jets fan, hard core as ever. I don’t live in New York, so I have to get special programming from Directv in order to see my team. That’s new! Satellite TV didn’t exist when I was a kid. Neither did the Internet, laptops and cell phones that connect to just about any social network.
Now football gatherings consist of Directv, laptop or cell phone, red wine and hummus (eating habits have changed dramatically). There is no longer a bunch of men sitting around the living room screaming at the TV. The meeting place is now virtual. Twitter is where it’s at.
So now I sit upon my throne, connected to Twitter, typing in my comments as the game progresses. This is how I express my happiness or angst with how the game is going. While the interaction is not exactly the same as numerous people mill about my house, I still get to enjoy the company of fellow football fans from all over.
What’s even better is that if I happen to be traveling, I can watch the game from my laptop. How is that for convenience?! There is no doubt that technology has changed even how we enjoy sports. I wonder how this little tradition will change when my daughter is old enough to start screaming at the TV.

I too like the Jets. And I’m guessing I’m older than you because not only didn’t we have satellite, but I’m pretty sure that chicken wings hadn’t flown the their coop in Buffalo. Not that chips, dip and pizza were all that bad.
While I can’t get good pizza or regular Jets coverage from home, Buffalo Wild Wings is popping up all over the landscape. Every game, every degree of hot sauce, every beer on tap…and, unfortunately, every Pittsburgh Steelers fan on the planet. However, grab your friends and a designated driver and head on down to BWW (or any local sports bar with multiple TV’s)and enjoy football the way it was meant to be!
I hit the post button too soon:
